Community Service – All FLEX students must complete 50 hours of community service during their time on program.  This component of the program gives back to the local community, while ensuring that the student learns about volunteerism.  FLEX students need to perform at least seven hours of community service each month beginning with September.

Home Country Presentation- FLEX students must give at least one presentation on their home country to a local community group, such as the Girl/Boy Scouts, a church group, or elementary/high school.  This requirement is to promote International Education Week, which strives to prepare Americans for a global environment and attract future leaders from abroad to study and learn about the United States.  International Education week normally occurs the third week of November and you can learn more by going to http://iew.state.gov/.

Enhancement & Orientation Activities- FLEX participants and their families attend various activities designed to enhance their experience.  These activities can be fun and educational.  Examples of these activities include visiting historic sites or museums, holiday celebrations, or even going to amusement parks or state capitols. Seeing life through someone else’s eyes can be an enriching and interesting experience.  Maybe a FLEX student has never been to Sea World to see a killer whale jump, or visited a wild animal preservation park.  These types of activities enhance the exchange year while providing educational opportunities.  PIE Regional Managers and PIE Area representatives invite, coordinate, and chaperone various events throughout the year.

Pacific Intercultural Exchange wishes to thank everyone involved in the FLEX program- families, representatives, students, and school administrators- for giving students from Eurasia this incredible opportunity to study in the United States and experience American culture.

Please remember to send us photos and narratives on what FLEX students are experiencing to FLEX@pieusa.org.  As part of the grant program, Pacific Intercultural Exchange must report the progress of FLEX students to the US government.  The entire PIE staff enjoys managing and supporting the FLEX program and looks forwarding to working with you.
